  100. I live in Portland, Oregon. I believe it's so bad here - because non-profits and the city enable drug users, who are the homeless. Our streets are a national campground. The news reporters will interview the campers - and they say they've been homeless for 5-7 years. They also say they have nowhere to go. If you've had that many years on the streets - you've had time to come up with a plan. My compassion is gone, which is sad, but it's gone. With that said, there are NO in-house rehab places. At this point, I'm not really concerned about their rights. I believe we need mandatory in-house rehab. If you're caught smoking meth or whatever - you're gone. Straight to rehab. That's the only way this issue, at the root, is going to be solved.

I'm in the US - and it depends on what state you live in, regarding minimum wage. A lot of southern states use the Federal Minimum wage...$7.25/hr. That's impossible to live on. I live in Portland Oregon and our minimum wage is $14.00/hr...but the cost of living here is very high, so that's not enough money. Due to Covid, and all the unemployment people received...employers are offering more $$ an hour to get people back to work. My friend is Puerto Vallarta, was shocked at my minimum wage...he'd love to come to the states to work. I have a friend in Guadalajara who is a lawyer...and I make more money than she does. I work at my son's food truck. That's crazy, because she has a solid education...she should make more. As a frequent traveler to Mexico...I watch where I spend my money and always make sure I tip. For me, Mexico is inexpensive, and I'm poor by US standards. I know what it's like to work your butt off and rely on tips for my income. I pass it along. When it's time to retire - which is soon for me, I'll be in Mexico. My US dollar goes much further in Mexico...I cannot afford to retire in the states.

He doesn't go to Mexico for the culture though - he goes for the drinks and the beach. PERIOD. If I wanted to hang out with a bunch of blitzed gringos, hell, I'd go to Vegas. (Not a fan of Vegas). I was in Cancun last year around this time, only for some ocean swimming...it was more in my budget coming from Guadalajara, than Puerto Vallarta. I went downtown and I got a totally different vibe than I had in the past. Been several times, because if I want to vacay with my son, we go to Cancun. Last year people were hostile, unfriendly: Not welcoming. I'm not saying it should be canceled...but I'm not interested in ever going back. I"m a Puerto Vallarta gal 100%. Plenty of awesome beaches to choose from. Mazatlan is amazing as well, might I suggest Stone Island? Boat taxi to the island...wonderful swimming and open air restaurants!

I was getting more money than I had if I had still been working. I saved a lot of that money for taxes...and to be prepared for the unknown. I never had a problem paying my rent. My confusion comes in when people say that can't or didn't pay their rent. The only folks that wouldn't receive unemployment are those that hadn't been working in the first place. I'm grateful how Oregon handled the huge demand for unemployment...and the federal government stepping up. I'm back to work...but I'm sending the Department of Employment a thank you note.

  398. This is a really good conversation to have. It's something that's been on my mind when I'm in Mexico. It's not the good ole days for foreigners anymore, the Mexican government has made it more challenging to get residency, or even the full 6 month tourist visa. I'm not angry about it. My country, the USA, hasn't treated Mexico or Mexicans very well. That's all I have to say about that issue. Not all gringos have a lot of money, that's why Mexico is so attractive for living. Now one must prove an income of $2600/per mo to get temporary residency in Mexico. I don't make that kind of money. So it kind of feels like gentrification effects myself, as a foreigner. Mexico may no longer be affordable for someone in my financial situation. The taxes is a tricky subject. As a US citizen, if I don't pay my taxes, I won't have a social security check when I'm able to retire. I never want to take away from the Mexican communities I visit. Maybe I tip more, or buy more out of guilt...to make sure I'm having a positive impact where ever I'm visiting. My friend, who lives in Guadalajara, has had to be the face for me when renting a place. We were going to go in on a home with 5 bedrooms and then rent out rooms on Airbnb. We both decided to keep me out of it...not letting the landlord know that a gringo was part of the rental agreement, to keep the cost down. We both knew if the landlord saw me, the price would go up. I guess it's the nature of the beast.

  606. I love Mexico - spent 3 months in Mexico during the spring. I was blown over at how much everything costs. I recently applied for my temporary residency - and it's iffy at best if I get it. The requirements ($$) has sky-rocked!! It's not attainable anymore for the average US citizen. If this keeps up - Mexico's divide between the "haves and have nots" will be huge. I don't understand the "Super Peso" - and I'm not sure how it's either good or bad for the locals. But it appears to be bad for everyone involved.
