Junior developer here: diligence and conscientiousness is paramount in all projects because it solves problems that don't need to exist. Prevention is always cheaper than repair in the long run. Everyone should abide by standards especially when working with others (not just learning new unrelated things alone) and ESPECIALLY with something as large, important, and visible as the world's most used kernel lol Linus was restrained imho, he could've been much, much harsher by all rights.
