Unions became important as employee organizations when dealing with a company having many locations. There may be legal issues, besides the logistical issues, that make organizing across company locations problematic. But, unions became the "go to" because people are mostly lazy, while some are especially industrious in providing union solutions for a price. And connections to organized crime didn't hurt the unions' potency in popular perception. So, the word, "union" conveys a certain gravity that no one likes to recognize for what it is...
