  1. The direct election of US senators is a big mistake. The senate was supposed to be a check against the house of reps, the representation of state influence checking the "will of the people" which is notoriously short-sited and facile. Today, senators are more like super-mega-representatives, which reduces the dynamics of the system considerably.
