Maybe the stupid concept of "free society" is antithetical to reason. Maybe it's not so much a stupid concept as a utilitarian myth, this "free society". The larger a cage is, the less it is like a cage. The "freedom" we think we have in society is simply the belonging/lattitude felt in being part of an homogeneous group. This acceptance evaporates as one deviates from the group norm, in any regard. Public shaming is the corrective action of a social group. It seems like in the US we are trying to implement a model of public shaming, but are failing for disregard of an important principle element: the personal sovereignty line-in-the-sand. This principle alone can rescue the public shaming model, as, without it, violence quickly ensues. Unfortunately, the only way to really get a handle on this principle is by getting your ass roundly kicked by a sovereign upon whom you've...trespassed.
