Self-distraction is a crutch. Save time and energy and just grapple with your issues straight up! Pain?! The brain EATS pain! I can feel as deeply as I choose to allow. You think it some kind of badge of honor to suffer long and hard?! Get over yourself! That's just self-pity, a curious perversion of pleasure. If you're not suffering, whether pain or pleasure, you're dead. But you don't have to give a fuck! And you can control the degree of immersion. Tease your limits, don't force them. You'll be dead soon enough. Find a vice you enjoy and probe its depths. No? Why not?! What are you saving yourself for!? The end of your teensy-weensy life?! Do what you want! You don't have much choice in that regard, anyway: you gotta do what you gotta do. You discover who you are by watching what you do (think, say, feel, etc...it's all "doing"). What you enjoy shows you the direction you must pursue to have the experiences necessary to fuel the "doing" you will observe as you discover yourself. Everything comes down to whether or not you believe that spiritual hierarchy exists: if "yes", then "you" reincarnate, and this present life is not the only life; if "no", then your life is pointless, purposeless, with no greater value than..."grist for the mill"; everything you discover about your "self" is mere delusion, a fancy of aberration, a floundering animality. "Everything comes down to...this."--Gary Numan.
