Still shots make it look like you got all day to respond to impending danger! In fact, after a half-second realization, there was no more than a half-second to respond. I see him pulling her away from impending danger. It's an instantaneous automatic response to immediate threat; a kind of "shrinking" response, where you attempt to shade yourself away from a danger area. I see no reason to assume he was using her as a shield, though it's not impossible. I think it comes down to whether the girl was his biological daughter, in which case I would expect his response to be INSTINCTIVELY unselfish.
