There's something called the WOT (WideOpenThrottle) procedure, to get the piston rings spinning: put it in 2nd, press the accelerator gradually to the floor, let in wind out to red line, then take the foot OFF the accelerator--I guess this is where the magic happens; back down to 35 mph or so, then do it again! It's good for what ails an old Northstar, anyway. Repeat monthly.
