  2. "The hard way" of learning something is the only way to really "get it". She had to learn this hard way because it was too difficult a lesson for her to learn more easily. Undoubtedly, she had opportunities to learn this lesson earlier--that's how the universe behaves. You get a number of "hints" of escalating impressiveness prior to "the big one". Nature speaks softly at first, then more loudly, then shouting, then a "slap up side the head" guaranteed to get your attention! The bigger lesson: pay more careful attention, to avoid getting beat up too bad!
