So, is there something wrong with "populism"? Capitalism and populism don't play on the same field! "Populism" is a boogyman, like "libertarianism". These are similarly poorly-defined bug-a-boos pressed into service to denigrate the people and their rights as less important than everything else. The "toothless" reputation of the libertarians is made to rub off onto populism to discredit it. "Populism" is a canard, a wild goose to be chased; it doesn't exist in a practical sense, but purely imaginatively as a counterpoint to "proper and respectable government", which tends to stray from the constraints of the popular interest and concern. Big government has a way of getting out of the control of the people. Populism is a threat to such government, so it is demonized and denigrated.
