Russia does "soft" influence: HELP a country as it wishes to be helped, graciously, without wrangling and blackmail, expecting favor to Russia to accrue naturally by the appropriate gratitude of the country helped. The US does "hard" influence: deals, blackmail, "conditions", etc., in the effort to secure special advantage. The US attitude is abusive to people who value their personal freedom from coercion, and they respond accordingly. I'm suspicious of people who do not understand how this works! It's really way to simple to NOT understand; therefore, the appearance of not understanding is a subterfuge. They certainly do understand, but they think the rules of reason don't apply to the most powerful country on earth--"might makes right!"
