Seems important races are always very, very "close". That way, we assume it was legit because we ALMOST WON! This is a faulty assumption, an emotional judgement--notoriously biased, but not entirely dysfunctional. That's how we get away with using it instead of the more-challenging mental judgement. The installed technology lets them adjust the races' closeness precisely to give whatever impression of events that they want.
