The transition to adulthood is psychologically traumatic, rendering the adolescent vulnerable to his own confusion and the manipulation of others. Puberty is a critical crucible for the initiation of adult sensibility. In the past, "rites of passage" clearly marked the transition from childhood to adulthood socially, providing a structure for adult development. In the modern day, such rites of passage are left mostly to peer group societies whose viewpoints are parochial relative to the larger society. It seems clear from this interview video that conscientious parental supervision is key to a "safe" puberty.
