  1. Sacrifice is willingly foregoing the lesser for the greater. In the personal sphere we crucify desire on the cross of practicality in the service of the survival instinct. So, the atheist must be incapable of sacrificing his life since, for him, there is nothing "greater" than his own life. The religionist, on the other hand, holds "something else" in higher regard, so he may sacrifice his life deliberately.
