"The minimization of unnecessary suffering" is a phrase containing three problematic terms: "minimization" (to any degree?), "unnecessary" (an uncertain judgement), and "suffering" (by which I must assume is meant, "unpleasant experience"). The parentheticals indicate, briefly, my objections. I mean, doesn't this sound a lot like "equality of outcome"? "Acting in love" is no guarantee the action won't be wrong in another context. It's fun watching intellectuals disagree. But ultimately this is pointless patter: "We should move to <insert social goal>" is not a useful prescription. It strikes me as being somewhat like people caring for a mayfly in a misguided effort to extend it 24-hr lifetime--and redoubling their efforts every time they fail. Nobody seems to understand the importance of the avoided issue: all this effort to "help" is pointless if there is nothing anything like an "afterlife"/spiritual reality--AND actually detrimental if there IS anything like an "afterlife"/spiritual reality.
