  1. Historically, it would seem, "free speech" is a crazy idea! Kings are notorious for not liking what people say, especially about them...and, really, everything is about them. Without a government interested in protecting freedom of speech it would simply be unwise to speak freely, without considered reticence. Somebody will hear, be offended or threatened, and act with preemptive intent. If that person is more powerful than you, you lose! Maybe, everything! I don't know if it's especially important that we feel free to speak the truth--the truth might have greater value and impact if one has to suffer to reveal it. What good is it, though?! The value it SERVES is as a structural element of society. But, I don't see a universal good in the free expression of the truth. The truth is all there is; if your mind is awake it's filled with truth. What good does it really do to have people telling you what the truth is?! It's only demeaning, and assaultive.
