  1. Self-sacrifice is an aspect or expression of "honor". The British have a reputation for stiff-lipped composure in the face of challenge--in a word, "courage". "Respect" is the natural response to such a person who has developed the requisite self-control through a habit of self-discipline. Culturally, such a person is "admired" as a model of most excellent accomplishment and behavior; the inspiration of "stories" that contribute to a unified national history, the cultural identity.

  2. The "problem of the center and the periphery"! Every FORM has a center and a periphery at the form's greatest extent from the center. The center is the functional identity of the form. The center is the only point within the form from which the entirety of the form appears without distortion.

  3. "What is the essence of civilization...?" 🤔 "Essence"...as in "essential"? I'd say "self-control" fits that bill, simply because that's what is required in order to reliably follow a rule system, which is the fundament of civilization's structure. The political style of a civilization may be determined by the proportion of the people who have sufficiently little self-control. If that percentage is sufficiently high the political style may have to be more authoritarian than otherwise necessary.
