  1. It should be embarrassing for a politician to speak, or otherwise behave, irrationally, without due regard for the balance of the facts. But that's a higher standard than the current congress can hope to approach. Until composure becomes a point of pride, there's no apparent upside to congressional competence. You don't get reelected for doing a good job; you get reelected for LOOKING like you're doing a good job. The difference is psychologically HUGE. You might as well ask the man on the street to care for somebody else more than he cares about himself. Altruism is a fantasy.
