  1. Journalism has long been appropriated by the elite to promote their narrative. When this influence was generally undetectable, it worked. The elite could steer sentiment apparently organically, but not nearly so easily, now. When the influence is detectable, the narrative decays, and the cracks show. Trust in the media is what made the whole thing work. Without that trust, the viewer's natural skepticism neutralizes the narrative's attractiveness, and the influence operation fails.
