Unknown5 There are many, many diaries, letters and other related records of pirate attacks that show almost all men sailing the seas at that time were extremely cruel and barbaric, whether they were pirates or not. Even into the 1940s, English Naval ships were known for their vicious punishments, and continued an ancient practice of using young cabin boys as sex slaves while at sea. Unfortunately, as a long time history student, I have come across too much evidence that shows the pirates weren't the only psychopaths sailing!!!

As if life wasn't hard enough, they had to add human sacrifice dodgeball...wtf?

There are some old videos on utube of Confederate veterans giving the Rebel Yell. They are very old, and the film is from the 20s or 30s, but they really give it their all, and you get a decent idea of what it would have been like to hear thousands of soldiers screeching like wild big cats as they came charging toward you...

Leave it to the church to invent the most vicious, inhumane and psychotic torture as theater. I think I would definitely kill myself before suffering any of these..

Since life was so insanely difficult back then, just to live, I cannot even imagine how tough the extra super heroes were!! I read a book called, "Natural Born Heros" by Cris Macdougal, who talked about how the hero's of ancient Greece came about through legend and real life. They weren't just legends, either, in WW2, the natives of Crete were able to survive unbelievable hardships and even that many of the the hideous nazi attempts to subdue their island. They could scramble up mountains that goats had difficult times traversing, and could live on food foraged from the surrounding landscape. They hid in tiny caves and even managed to kidnap a high ranking nazi officer and spirit him away from the island, in spite of being chased by hundreds of soldiers! It's an incredible story.

The novel, "All Quiet on the Wrstern Front" by Erich Maria Remarque should be read by everyone. The 1930 film is also unbearably moving and stays with you. Remarque was a veteran of WWI and a German soldier who was swept up in the patriotism and hysteria at the beginning of the war. His loss of all his friends and the terrible, futile reality left him forever scarred. Lewis Milestone, the director of the movie (of the same name as the novel) was Russian/Jewish and escaped to America just prior to the war, joining the US Signal Corps. and helping to film training videos for the services. After the war he made his way to Hollywood.

Jess Hammond No one is stupid who is open to learning. You are NOT stupid! Some historians believe that people killing millions of cats in their belief that they were agents of the devil caused the rat population and their fleas to explode. The plague that exists in places today, however, has different symptoms. It is still plague, but the giant buboes (big zits of infection) all over the victims body are not seen now. Plague can be treated with antibiotics today. Another reason that THESE are the good old days, at least medically!

steeveneleven That's amazing! Did you ever see any photos of him as a sweep?

Exactly! Can you imagine what it must have been like to hear thousands of angry young men screeching like that? It would make your hair stand up!!

Scupacium If it is important to you and gives your day an extra lift, by all means feel great. "To find joy in being first, though a small pleasure, shows a man is wise in finding joy where he can." said no Bhuddha ever, but he probably would have if he lived in the internet age. So be happy!

Jess Hammond What are you saying?

I love your channel!!! You put so much in each subject, and I always learn something! Also, you are a fantastic narrator! I don't have to cringe because your pronunciations are spot on!!!

J McNew What's worse is a belief common at the time was that the station you had in life was "the Lord's" doing, so you didn't have to feel guilty! That gave a ton of people a sense of righteousness about burning the chimney sweeps behind. Hey, if it's all preordained, who cares? ugh!

@vincedibona4687 Oops! Thank you!

Jayden Bell You are right. It's too easy to forget or try to forget the terrible horrors and the people lost to greed and cruelty. Your comment reminded me to light a candle for remembrance and honor of the dead. (I'm not a Christian, just an animist. I believe all things have a life force and deserve respect).
