I think you're right. People thrown out of their routine by a sudden event, alone and possibly frantic can be clumsy, stumbling, losing a grip or even falling. There is also the slim possibility that Cody had a heart attack or seizure during the attempted rescue and just fell out. There are great whites as well in the waters there, if they were unlucky enough to fall in and begin to struggle, it could attract a predator, but that's a wild guess. .

@mattojeda1491 I'm glad you didn't laugh at the idea of sharks! My sister used to dive in the 70s, and saw many great whites. (This was before jaws came out, and scared us all out of the water...) There were also a couple of attacks off San Francisco when I was growing up there. Surfers always saw them. Plus, that water is the coldest thing I've ever experienced, just getting splashed made me cold for hours, I can't imagine anyone surviving in that for more than a very few minutes, especially if you're scared and hyperventilating.

@LukeRen-rl4yv Sure, they would have been scared, but they would have been trained to call it in, report where the enemy was, even if under fire. It is unlikely that they would have just jumped out, they would have known they would die by drowning or hyperthermia if they didn't give their location.

@sarjim4381 I think you're right about the hypothermia. It's the most likely cause of death. I have only been out on boats a few times, once on a cat at a lake which was supposed to be notorious for wind conditions and drownings. A bunch of us landlubbers were on it for the first time and it was incredibly exciting flying the hull, absolutely amazing, I was in heaven!! Then I noticed that half the people had fallen of during the fly. It was a wild ride, but not that wild. They just got scared thinking we were tipping over. It took several minutes to back and pick them up. I noticed how difficult it was to find someone in a large area of water. If you are experienced I'm sure it's different, but I had trouble spotting our companions in the glare and waves.

@badlaamaurukehu You are incredible!! I used to body surf at Santa Cruz in August, but still turned blue!! I could not snorkel in those waters! That is hardcore! It's kind of sad....everytime I go to California now I get chilled, and we didn't even have a heater when i was growing up in Palo Alto, just a big stack of blankets...
