@bigblue6917 I read that during the expansion of the west, it was a way to warn pioneers of particular dangers as well as marking moments in history. No one is going to water their horses at "every horse dies" creek, or try to traverse, "wrong way, dummy" trail....

@mikemills69 It still never fails to bring to mind cannibalism to this day. Whenever I've been up there, and around Truckee, even in early Autumn, I cannot imagine how they could have even attempted this crossing! Its dangerous in a CAR in winter!

@TheHistoryGuyChannel I was always intrigued by not only the number of Earp brothers, but the fact that most of them ran saloon/brothel combination businesses that were so popular back then. I read recently that Wyatt actually met his wife, Josephine, while she was working for his brother in one of those towns. They even went on to open saloons in the Klondike during the gold rush! I have a biography by Josephine Earp, but she sanitizes her past so thoroughly it gives the impression that she was on her way to Sunday school when she suddenly comes to in Tombstone!

@jiveturkey9993 I had some decent teachers, but did not go nuts about history until I married a Texan and moved next door to the Alamo... I found out after my mom died that she was not only half Indian, but had been born on a ranch outside if Dallas in a line house for cowboys; she was in Texas until the great depression sent them starving, to California so my grandfather and great uncles could get work building the golden gate bridge. She never once breathed a word about it, pretending to us that she was a white as a lily Californian... I think her memories were bad, and being part bow and arrow in those days could get you in trouble with school and jobs, so she just trimmed it all away. Looking up my family was a big surprise. The constant revelations had me dying to find out everything, then led to history in general...if it hadn't been for the "big secret", I might never have become a history buff and writer...

@aliceshaw8265 I disagree, there are amazing stories. There were huge numbers of black people who, I have to tell you, were ALL DIFFERENT. Just the music alone, that began as a way for slaves to communicate to each other without punishment, is a huge subject that resonates today. Thousands of former slaves became writers, poets, inventors, doctors, speakers, you name it It takes a lot to shock me, but the fact that you actually believe that there were just a few, boring people who were not white is probably the saddest and most unenlightened comment I have ever come across.

Has anyone been to Tombstone? I went there years and years ago and it was completely quiet and empty, practically. It didn't take much imagination to envision it as it was back in the day, but, I was wondering if it is different now..

Thank you!! I have several bios of these trials and I agree that he doesn't give the impression of being a fair guy a lot of the time. It's actually more fascinating to find him such a complex person, instead of a superhero. Imo.

@sillyone52062 That is amazing, I was there in 1981, but didn't see a shootout, or hardly anything, it may have been a holiday or something...its on my list as a place to go back and visit.

@edwinthompson6510 I just saw your fascinating reply, and I'm so happy that you have managed to hold onto so much history! You should consider writing a book about that time in Alaska and your how your relatives got there, who they knew, what happened and where they ended up later. So many people would be thrilled to have more of a day to day idea of that time. I know I will grab any book about real persons during these early years! Seriously, please consider it. Your information is too good not to share with a wide audience who would appreciate it so much! Contact a couple of book publishers or get an agent. I'm sure you have a full life, but I urge you to do this, it would be wonderful to frame your family members in that exciting and very pivotal moment in history.😀

@mercoid Hey, my folks have been here for a couple hundred years on my dads side, and my mom was half Indian so we love history! Young people aren't usually interested in history because they are making it. They live in the present, which is completely natural. Don't pick on kids, please...

The same way we regard Watergate now. I was a kid during Watergate and we had to watch it unfold for history's sake. It is moving almost identically now, with about the same number of rabid fans of the president then as now. I remember people loudly claiming that Nixon was completely set up, that it was a "witchhunt" by his enemies, and that the press was paid to lie. Even when Nixon confessed on air that he was above the law, his supporters thought it was a trick. Not much changes as far as human nature. If people attach their ego to someone, they will never believe they were wrong.

@edwinthompson6510 Thanks for the incredible info on your relatives being in Nome with the Earps!! I have so many old histories on the gold rush and the old west and I am endlessly amazed at who was at the party! The Mizner Brothers, one of whom was a famous Hollywood writer in the 20s and 30s was there, his brother started the first land development in Florida (it busted during the first hurricane to take out a development!) and the third brother created Madison Square Gardens. Just the idea that these New York theatre people were among those snowed in for months at a time just floors me! In Josephine's bio, she has a photo of the tiny cabin they had in the Klondike, but its confusing because she also said that she lived above the saloon. And I always thought the upstairs were for the prostitutes. So many stories. I hope you were able to find some old letters or photos, in my family most of our diaries and letters from the 1800s vanished through the years. I did hang on to a very old album of 1880s formal portraits of my mothers side of the family. I wish now I had been able to track down every piece! Thanks again for your wonderful comment!

I was sad when I learned that Lily Langtry finally made it to his town, but he had already died. And she was fat and fifty...not at all the romantic Paul Newman dramatic movie I remember!

The movie Tombstone with Val Kilmer is my favorite, even though I was never a big fan of his. I just thought he played it so wonderfully. He really gave the impression of being a very polite southern gentleman, but also fairly unhinged as well...

@edwinthompson6510 I know, but they had to convince people Doc was suffering on film and if he coughed and hacked too much people would just want him to get it over with! I agree though, they did have him perspiring too much! I don't know why I like that version so much. There are some great old forgotten films on the shootout that are on TCM sometimes. It seems that every big star that ever lived played one of the Earps. I think if we all knew those people in person we probably wouldn't care for them. It was a very crude place and time. Almost no one had any education or knowledge of the world, life itself was cruel and usually short. I was born in 1961, my mother in 1925 (her father was a cowboy on a ranch near Dallas, TX). I heard a lot of very horrible stories of life lived in the west, away from big cities. Things really stayed the same as they were in the 1890s for a very long time out in rural areas! It impossible to imagine now, almost. fascinates me though.

It's the most ridiculous conspiracy of all, they only have to watch him fumble his way into total chaos; every single friend, business partner and advisor has confessed to federal crimes, the evidence is on tapes, on film, on paper and thousands of documents, and yet you are blindly insisting that this criminal is a "good boy". Dictator Donny is the worst travesty ever wrought on this country in 300 years. You are as guilty as he is for lying to yourself about him. If you love him so much, move to Russia and start a fan club....

I've posted this before somewhere, but many men drifted to Hollywood from old mining towns and ranches, finding work in the early westerns as stuntman and riders. In the early days, the men looking for work as extras would gather outside the studio on a side street off Hollywood Blvd. called Gower st., the men called it Gower Gulch. I came across a photo somewhere of men standing outside on the street, waiting for work in the 1920s. Even the corny Saturday morning westerns had incredible stunt riders who routinely risked life and limb for a few dollars.
