We have a place way out in the country...we always used to joke that if there was ever a big disaster we could go there for a long time because it has a well, a river and tons of game.... We are heading there tommorow... I don't remember much about making biscuits over a camp fire or building a lean to, but there are some really good wineries nearby, so we should be ok. I read a memoir by a French women who had to escape Paris during the nazi occupation with her mother in law, father, cousins and assorted other relatives to a small country house way out in the middle of nowhere. There were fruit trees and small game, but after a few months, the well ran dry. This was serious, they were in hiding and couldn't go run around the countryside asking for help. They broke into the locked cellar and found hundreds of bottles of champagne. For a couple of weeks they drank it, cooked with it and bathed in it. They all got along great for the first time and were sorry when water was again available....

@joannaforthewin You should read her memoir. She wrote it under the name Nicole Nobody, but she was the 13th (or 14th?) Duchess of Bedford in the 60s and 70s. You can Google her. Her memoir is insane. She had four children during the war and also worked in the French Resistance (when she was pregnant!). Her kids are almost supernaturally beautiful, and her oldest daughter, Caterine Millianaire, co wrote the incredible fashion book of the 70s, called Cheap Chic. I have a first edition I got as a frumpy teenager in the 70s, and it changed my entire life! I became a total original to this day, and was able to be beautiful by making my own style inspired by the great ideas it had....
