Dylan always wanted to be Robert Johnson...he was friends with designer Vicky Tiel, and she said he played the coffee shops in Greenwich Village until he changed his name and consciously worked towards success, which was considered "selling out" at the time. He probably always felt guilty, in the good old Jewish tradition, about wanting to be famous... He felt that it was more poetic to sell his soul at the crossroads than to just be a good salesman.
