I was a kid in the SF Bay area when the exorcist opened in San Francisco, and we immediately heard reports of people fainting and throwing up in the theatres...there were news reports showing guys dragging their sobbing and screaming dates out of the lobby every night. There were protests and arguments about it, and several impressionable people had complete mental breakdowns..nothing like it had ever been thought of and of course we were dying to see how bad it was. My mother was so upset about it and we weren't allowed to even talk about it. I was so scared of their reactions that I didn't see it until it was on tv one Halloween in the 80s. I was 26 and I still closed all the curtains, turned off the lights and watched it alone....

@ankurdas1167 I thought it was great! Weird, scary and ominous. The acting was pretty good and it was very refreshingly different than anything else I'd ever seen. I didn't freak out or anything, just had fun watching it. The idea of that happening in RL was terrifying, but I worked in Hollywood for a few years so I couldn't suspend my disbelief too much, as I had worked on sets and movies...it was still a wild ride of a movie though...
