When the Loma prieto earthquake struck I was in los Angeles taking a bath, and the water in the tub suddenly turned into waves. My husband said, "big quake hitting SF, get out of the tub!" A lot of our friends lived in SF and it was impossible to get in touch with anyone because no cell phones, and the lines all went dead or were overwhelmed immediately. Luckily, except for some broken bones, they survived. My dad drove the Nimitz Freeway for over 20 years at rush hour, and had retired the year before, so was spared being trapped when the freeway collapsed ...
