After seeing Tom Hanks in the tv show, "Bosom Buddies" in the 60s, I never could have imagined him as a straight dramatic actor! He showed his chops for drama in the cross over film, "Joe Versus the Volcano" with Meg Ryan, who was also great in it, playing three different characters. Hanks brought so much pathos and real feeling to the part, and though the movie was very uneven, and couldn't decide whether it was a straight comedy, or something else, Hanks took the part and actually make you care about him. It was the first movie that showed him acting the drama with ease.

@johnqpublic770 It premiered in 1980, but it was a total 70s comedy to me, so I always think of it in the late 70s, the early 80s was so awful....entertainment wise, imo. Someone else might have thought it was fantastic.
