It's because he had a hit song there and everyone in America hated his singing. That's all. And he sang when the berlin wall fell. People remember that, even though he was nothing. I never thought Germany loved him, he just had a tiny bit of fame there and milked it as much as he could...

@clarapfeiffer7172 That must be it. He was kind of popular in Europe compared to here. A funny thing is that I moved to LA for 4 years while my husband worked for a big music studio, and while we were shopping in Beverly Hills, (Rodeo Drive!) I saw Hasselhoff on an escalator with his arm around a young starlet. I was obviously staring and he looked over and winked. My husband practically vomited because he didn't think much of him. I learned that when you see stars out shopping or whatever, during the day, they are out of work! Working actors and musicians are always on location or working very long hours, so the only ones out and about are in between gigs. We actually often saw a lot of former stars who roamed around Beverly hills, just hanging out....it was always kind of surreal to see people in person that you watch on TV. Later, when I worked on some shows, it was even weirder....

@candyDander I was lucky to be in LA during the early 90s while my husband worked as a sound engineer for an R&B music studio. It was a lot of fun.
