Virginia Wolfe, the writer, had a phobia of defecation. She strictly kept away from food as much as possible because she thought it was so sickening to use the bathroom. She was institutionalized a few times and forced to eat huge amounts of food, which made it worse...

I can say that exposure therapy does work. I was so afraid of insects that an ant could make me ill. I grew up in California and since they had malathioned the crap out of the entire state, I never saw more than a couple of spiders. Then I married and moved to Texas. Big difference. I thought I would die of fear for years, until I finally just accepted that there were a lot of bugs...it wasn't easy or fun, but it's a huge relief not to break out in a rash or faint at the sight of a bug anymore.
