David Kennedy Everything happened there! People were shot, people tried to run away, some drank it willingly and some gave it to their kids, realized what they did, and panicked. It was a wholesale massacre. Murder. I saw the live shooting on tv when it happened and we were all in shock! I grew up in the Bay Area and San Francisco attracted the most deranged religious fanatics during the 60s and 70s. Most people were just exploring new things, but unfortunately millions of runaway, broke kids were pouring in and turning instinctively to anyone who seemed authoritative. Almost all the girls were sexually abused. It was so sad. Hundreds of these girls were fleeing sexual abuse at home. The whole thing was a terrible mess. In California, I believe the militant feminist movement came out of the experiences of these abused girls who grew up hating what had been done to them.

@dinozorman I was talking about the Jim Jones massacre and a certain era in the 1960s. Your comment is like someone saying, "Tell me more about how Alaska attracts greedy people." in response to a comment of mine regarding the klondike gold rush of the 1890s. I was speaking of what happened during a particular time of great social change, NOT stating that it is like that all the time. Either you cannot understand context, or history, or you're just trolling out of boredom or stupidity.

@johnalanelson I was referring to the shooting of the people leaving on the helicopter. I can't remember everyone's names, but I vividly remember watching TV and seeing the sudden gunfire and falling bodies. It was a big shock! I heard that only Jones died by gunfire, but when the tapes were released, you could hear gunfire. I always thought that some people were shot.

@johnalanelson really? Well, I remember it vividly, and obviously wrong. Was it a small plane, like a cesna or something? Thanks for telling me!

Erick Your argument that the traditions of Rome built successful infrastructure and were therefore worth emulating, ignores the extremely unpleasant traditions of emperors like Tiberius and Caligua, among many others. Is that your idea of civilization? What about the slavery in Rome? How is your logic putting these things together as better than what we have today? Life then was extremely brutal, precarious and short. Historically speaking, there have been people bemoaning the lack of civilization in every era. Its too easy to idealize something you believe in without looking closely at the details. There is no reason to demonize huge populations of people because they do not instantly agree with you. I am not "left" or "right". I do not label myself because I am a complex human being with a feeling that humanity can only survive if it stops hating out of fear. Try to look at everything, not just what you personally agree with, see a larger picture, and go from there.

@johnalanelson You are being very kind, I appreciate it! Your comment made me think about why I was convinced it was live and I think it was because the news showed the shooting, or at least some of it, and I had never seen a real death on tv at my age. I know the Vietnam War footage was shown sometimes, I think, but I wasn't allowed to watch it. It's interesting how dramatic incidents can "jell" in the memory so stubbornly. It's important to know what and how it really happened. Seriously, I'm glad you told me (in a nice way!).
