  1. I remember a documentary on the restoration and cleaning of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Hundreds of years of candles burning had obscured the panels and led people to think that the colors were muted. It was so incredible to find the deep, vivid colors that were hidden under the soot and dirt. I also seem to remember that the Pieta was attacked by a psychotic man who hacked at it with a sledgehammer or something...i think the photos were in Life magazine.
