Romel Negut It should be a warning to anyone in power, but they never, ever get it. Persons of power who abuse it, ALWAYS end up going the same way as all the others they abused, yet the lesson never sinks in.

john pardon They did actively, and with barbaric glee, participate; many of the mobs were mostly women. The fact that starvation killed their children while the aristocracy partied, made them insane with hatred.

Qardo Many people who would never have had a chance to better themselves, felt that the rights of man rose out of the blood sacrifice made by so many so that their children would have a better life. Soldier Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was able to become a marcheal of France, Governor of Hanover, and finally Crown Prince of Sweden and eventually King, all of which was made possible by the rights of man. I'm not saying I agree with it in any way, just that the bloody upheaval benefitted many.

Napoleon was able to become a general because of the revolution. Before that, only nobles were officers. They came to Paris from Corsica and lived in a tiny dank basement while napoleon joined the army and supported his entire family of 8-10 people, including uncles and his salary kept them all from starving. Director Barras needed someone to stop the mobs and restore order and Napoleon had canon and guns fired into a crowd of adults...and children. Barras introduced him to a beautiful, aristocratic widow with two children. Josephine. She had only just missed being guillotined by a day or two. Napoleon needed someone to help him work with both the titles and the revolutionaries. Josephine needed to be with someone rising in power who could protect her and her children in the mess. That's a very scratchy description, but the story is so incredible, with so many twists and turns, coincidences and sudden changes, that even people who hate history, would love looking into this era. Many people we still know of today were survivors of the bloodbath and made their mark on the world stage..its astonishing.

@brewtalityk I've heard that sports hysteria is engineered to focus violent feelings away from those at the top. Politicians always have a few groups or causes to generate so they can direct anger like a firehose, and people will always be a mob. it seems to be one of the most ancient concepts of civilization...

Alexander Gilles I remember the stand off, was in Texas and heard many speeches by Koresh. he was unbelievably monotonous. He wanted to believe that everyone wanted to kill them because of their christianity, in spite of the fact that no one cared what they believed. He insisted on whipping up total hysteria among his followers by keep them from any media, and constantly proclaiming that he would "fight to the death" to protect his flock. In order to give the authorities something to worry about, he stockpiled weapons and made sure everyone knew he was sleeping with underage children. He did everything he possibly could to get his initially imaginary war to become real. Then he felt like he could become a martyr. It was such a pathetic attempt at fame. I felt so sorry for all the people who had such poor self esteem that they were willing to believe ANYTHING so long as it was repeated enough times...
