I used to think that too, but Sister Spooky is exactly right. "Mother Hubbards" were kind of the 19th century version of a caftan, just big roomy draped cheap dresses to cook and clean in. Only Keira Knightley gets to wear the elaborate ten layer costumes in every film she makes... That said, I have often wondered whether she did kill them. Money is so often the catalyst for murder...

I'd like to see different groups done. One subject a month or something: the most crazy inventors, the most eccentric English lords, the most powerful 19th century women, etc. They can be good or bad, as long as they're interesting...

@brotherchungus5464 I can tell you why. The pans of bread baked in the old days had a delicious light, airy crust on top. The bottom crust was often heavy, too moist and tougher. So, "being upper crust" was getting the best of the bread, and leaving the chewy, tasteless dough at the bottom for the less favored. Its astonishing how many sayings or proverbs in every language revolve around food. People used to have limited diets, no sweets or salt, milk or butter, unless rich. Having a good meal was the epitome of wealth for centuries. Now, we can all enjoy diabetes and gout!

@sisterspooky I dont think he deserved an axe to the face, but almost everyone agrees that he was a total A-hole! I agree with you completely. Those sisters were left in a completely outsider status in the society of the time. This kind of parent is what fueled young women working for emancipation.

@NotHPotter You made a perfect observation! I grew up with a lot of wealthy kids, and almost all of them had no sense of the meaning of, "financial long term planning". And I married someone who did not worry about money, and did not care about it, until later in life. I have to say now he's great at it, but the knowledge that you don't have to think about where it's coming from, is a terrible thing. The worst thing for children is to either ALWAYS get their own way, or NEVER to get their own way. It messes kids up for life...

Could it be possible that Lizzie Borden has dissociative identity disorder? She did it, but had no memory of it.... I thought she had some mental problems: kleptomania, bio polar mood swings,...it would explain her inability to give a straight story. Her identities could have been switching back and forth from the drugs and stress.
