  1. It's my understanding the Lackawanna Railroad switched its track from 6-foot gauge to 4' 8-1/2" in just one day. It's mind boggling to contemplate how they did it including sidings locomotives and all rolling stock. The Erie railroad is noted for its wide right of way, a holdover form the days it used 6 foot gauge.
