New variants will surface forever, each one more virulent than its predecessor, thanks in large part to masks, social distancing, lock downs and the vax, which have short-circuited herd immunity and created ideal conditions for mutations. Everything depends on whether people will tolerate more of the kind of abuse of power we've seen so far. If Covid Round 2 fails to sufficiently terrorize the population, democrats can hype climate change.
