  10.  Wang Dashan  Slavery was common practice in Africa at least as far back as 750 AD. Arab slave traders flourished there, too. A principal reason for attacking other tribes was to take captives that could be sold to them and, later, the Europeans as slaves. The stronger tribes also benefited by keeping captives as slaves for themselves. Business picked up when their chieftains and warlords realized that the Europeans would pay better prices for the goods. That's when they found their way to N. America.

  11.  Wang Dashan  It ended officially in 1865. what's your point? It had nothing to do with democracy. Besides we're a representative republic, not a full democracy. Why are we harping on something that happened more than 150 years ago? Not one person is alive today who had anything to do with slavery.
