Millions of people across the country will swallow that line of bullshit. The Washington Post already this AM has run a headline about "Trump's Nixonian Firing of Comey." Here we go. It will be a media circus. Trump's letter stating he was assured by Comey he was not under investigation will be conveniently omitted from all news reports. They'll pick and choose the parts of the letter that vaguely fits their narrative.
