At some point, the FBI is going to call for an indictment. It may be this week, it may be next month. But their recommendation will inevitably be put before the attorney general. If no one is above the law, as Barack Obama pointedly declared, he has no choice but to let the legal process go forward without pardon or subversion. It's not his fault, after all, that Hillary Clinton is a sleazeball. Why should he flagrantly disgrace himself to save her? Sure, there's his legacy and all that. If elected, she would supposedly carry his policies forward, in effect be the equivalent of a third Obama administration. But maybe Obama doesn't trust her either. Why should he? She's known to be a vicious, back-stabbing opportunist. Once elected she could just as easily start undoing the Big Man's many achievements and go her own wobbly way, making a fool out of him for her benefit. It's rumored that there's no love lost between Obama and the Clintons. He might relish seeing her take a fall, as he is undoubtedly relishing having her fate in his hands. He may be thinking that the best thing now would be for Trump to win. If Trump turns out to be a disaster, it'll make Obama look good by comparison, and in four years the Democrats will be back in power––this time with a decent candidate.
