What happened here? I can only assume whatever financial base once existed is no longer there and most people have moved out. Interesting that the power lines are all underground which is often what's done n upscale neighborhoods for appearance sake.

While I've certainly seen much worse this doesn't look like a very nice place to live. Rather mundane and boring.
5
I wonder how they afforded the new fire department.
5
Check out Kensington Ave., Philadelphia some time. It makes this look like upscale living.
5
I noticed many areas have no power lines so I'm assuming no electricity in many of those beautiful homes.
5
Good question.
5
@hoodsnhollers I don't know how you can go wrong with oil, but they did.
5
You think this is bad? Visit EAST Cleveland!
4
What's the enormous institution at the end of the video? A big reason why there's so much poverty. Jobs leave. Poverty sets in.
4
I think it rivals Detroit.
4
I don't think you get rich with a cupcake shop or bakery.
4
Downtown sure is quiet. Looks as if many places are open for business, but no takers.
4
Tried to google the place for more information; found nothing.
4
Maybe these videos will give enough publicity to all these small towns and generate new interest that could lead to a rebirth of them.
3
Not enough money to buy food for them.
3
No place in the United States should look like this.
3
You either walk down or up a long flight to get to some houses. I don't think I'd like that.
3
How did the church manage to remain so well maintained? This place reminds me of the song Tobacco Road by the Nashville Teens.
3
I did see a lot of nice cars in the streets. We traded industrial pollution and good jobs for rampant urban decay and poverty. Who's better off now?
3
Some of the homes are well kept. I wonder what people do for money in a place like this?
3
The obviously government provided housing looks nice. As for the rest, not as bad as Detroit and most of it appears to be still occupied.
3
It's a 55 Pontiac.
3
I think about that, too.
3
All of these impoverished towns seem to have at least one church in pristine condition, well maintained. They have money for that.
3
Looked like it to me. Maybe houses are across the street and still lived in.
3
Apparently lots of apartments were already built and now lay abandoned and vandalized. What can be done with any single family homes? They'll end up the same way after taxpayers pay to rebuild them.
3
What's the huge, fenced n complex with very old brick buildings towards the end of the video? Hospital? Mental institution? It's huge. All that abandoned? What a shame.
3
A well used double track mainline railroad still exists passing this place right on by.
3
Typical old coal mining town that's lost it's jobs, money and industry so most have left. WV's dotted with them but still ships a lot of coal annually from other parts of the state.
2
I didn't see anybody anywhere! Where is everybody? Streets are full of cars. Buildings downtown look new or renovated. Not a soul around. One lone guy walking a street. Strange.
2
100% correct.
2
How do you know? He had his back to the camera. Don't teachers get good medical benefits and decent pensions upon retirement?
2
@hoodsnhollers That was a year ago and I have seen it. thanks for the reminder. I wonder how it is today? Probably worse.
2
I'm wondering what it is, too.
2
I like the one in the very beginning with all the junk cars in the yard. 🙂
2
Looks similar to detroit but not nearly as bad. It's actually pretty clean.
2
My guess is the road with all the rugs on it was probably a feeble attempt at patching pot holes. I didn't count them.
2
Understandable. It was a nice place at one time.
2
I wonder what kind of crimes are committed here? There's nothing to steal and hardly a soul around.
2
It's a shame for the people who have kept their homes up and still live in them surrounded by all the urban decay. It's inexcusable the wealthiest nation in the world should have cities like this yet they're all over the country.
2
It's a shame what's happened to the coal industry although it is still doign well in some areas.
2
What happened to the ceramics industry? Don't peopll buy dishes anymore or did that go to China?
2
They're abandoned.
2
These places always have houses 2 feet from industrial buildings, as in the beginning of the video. Isn't there any zoning or a planning board? Who would build a house 2 feet from a factory? Such as the place shown at :38.
2
City council is probably part of the problem.
1
People tell me 1/3 of the nation looks like this. That's unacceptable. We've really run America into the ground.
1
If this is gentrified, what does blighted look like? Who builds all the apartment complexes that now sit abandoned? Who paid for that? Another government boondoggle, I presume. It's a disgrace any part of the USA should look like this.
1
For those who have managed to hang on, I wonder what they do for a living?
1
So many buildings of brick and mortar whether they wee homes or businesses, just abandoned and vandalized.
1
What happened? Coal died.
