Before the Indians arrived here an estimated 15,000 years ago, a wide variety of animals owned the place. Before them it was the dinosaurs, and before them single-celled micro-organisms, etc. If we're going to pursue the logic of people like Marcus Ruiz Evans, why not simply hand California over to God and be done with it? It seems anyone who denigrates our European cultural heritage and maintains that we're illegitimate can attract flocks of followers ready to sign on to the idea of giving someone else's money and property away to groups who, on some pretext or other, are more deserving. I wonder if Marcus Ruiz Evans lives in the area of Eastern California he's proposing to give back to the tribes? And what about the internecine savagery the Indians engaged in during the thousands of years before we showed up? Evans has this notion that Sioux, Blackfoot, Cherokee, Comanche, Cheyenne, etc. are going to live cheek-by-jowl in Sesame Street-like harmony in the Native American Republic of California. Don't bet on it. Give them a few years and they'll be back to scalping each other and carrying off the squaws. As an afterthought, it's noteworthy that since we conquered the Indians there hasn't been a single inter-tribal war.
