The skill and engineering that went into this movie set is mind boggling just about as much as building the original ship. That said, to this day my favorite Titanic movie emains "A Night To Remember." You can bet Cameron studied that movie closely and learned a lot from it.

A criticism of the Titanic at the time proclaimed "Everything to enjoy life. Not much to save it." Realistically, I don't think there was any way to evacuate the ship 100% regardless of how many lifeboats it had.

Thanks for including the Great Eastern in this video. It's a ship that's always fascinated me despite its hard luck.

@lukethomas.125 It's my understanding one tower didn't have an alternative stair case to use. I may be wrong about that, but I seem to recall hearing something about it. As for a sinking ship, the elevators seem like the last escape route to use but in a panic people often don't know what to do. At least with the Titanic, power remained on almost to the end.

These liners really weren't designed to be evacuated no matter how many boats.

Definitely a big mistake the elevator.

Why would it capsize?

There's no way the crew had enough time to launch more than the 18 boats that did get off the ship. Had there been rough seas and a rescue ship, I wonder how useful the boats still would have been in shuttle passengers to another? Sadly, many people were doomed that night. There was no way around it.

It appears very few lifeboats were launched successfully.

Somewhere I think there's a picture of the gym with a man on the rowing machine.

As soon as the Titan fell out of communication I feared the worst. If it was a system failure the automatic fail safes should have kicked in and brought it to the surface. That didn't happen. The idea of it on the ocean floor with people still alive inside didn't make sense because it should have come to the surface. That it imploded 90 minutes into the dive as a result of deterioration of the hull seems to be what happened. It's a shame the cylinder was not periodically stress tested to be sue it was still strong enough to withstand deep sea dives. It held up for a while, but then luck ran out. After 111 years, the Titanic has taken 5 more lives.

The St. Louis is famous for it's ill fated trip in 1939 from Hamburg to Cuba, the US and Canada in an effort to save about 900 Jews onboard. No country would take them so it returned home, where about 250 of its passengers did ultimately die in concentration camps.

I became fascinated with the Titanic and all ocean liners, in 1958 when my father took me to see "A Night To Remember," then a new movie just released. I dreamed of finding the wreck someday and was so happy when it finally happened. When I saw the movie, the ship was already on the ocean floor for 46 years.

It's hard to imagine 500-1000 years into the future. Who knows if the planet Earth will even exist by than? If it does, will propel still be around learning about the Titanic and studying whatever remains? Impossible to say.

The door to the first class reception area, left open the night of the sinking, fell off quite some time ago and now lays on the ocean floor.

The Alas was a terrible makeover. I didn't like the addition of decks on the Norway, either. The way it looked as the France was best. I didn't like the blue hull all that much, but the ship did have a very long life. As a kid I remember building a model of the France when it was still very new.

Would it hurt to restore the big piece by painting it the colors it was on that part of the ship and replacing the broken glass? I don't see any harm in that.

Many of the drawings in the early part of the video appeared in the book "Story Of The Wreck Of The Titanic" published in 194, I believe. My grandmother had a copy of it and gave t to me when I was about 10 years old. It was another part of my fascination with the ship almost from day one. I remember reading it from cover to cover and still have it.

Too bad the Amerika never came to fruition. What a ship that would have been.

Why can't I skip You Tube ads any more? BS!

How deep is the water it sank in?

Two other ships built under Adolph Hitler that were pretty nice, but weren't ocean liners, were the Robert Ley and Wilhelm Gustloff, identical sister ships. The Gustloff is noted for having been torpedoed by the Russians in the Baltic Sea close to the end of the war with some 9000 refugees onboard, most of whom died. The Russians were ruthless in their treatment of the Germans.

Before the days of mechanical refrigeration, Titanic's builders used a system of fresh air ductwork to reach all parts of the ship. Plus those in staterooms had portholes to open. Titanic's cooling system apparently relied on humid, salt air from the ocean and probably not the best way to cool, but all that was available then. I suspect modern day cruise enthusiasts wouldn't enjoy a trip on the Titanic or any other ship of that era. Uncomfortable clothing and hot, incandescent light in the dining room probably wasn't much fun, either.

Fascination with the Titanic wreck never seem to abate.

Mind boggling technology that admitted I cannot fully comprehend. The designers and workers that mde it all operate cannot be given too much credit for their genius.

I learned how that forward anchor worked in this video. Interesting.

In 1914 a bo0k was published entitled "The Story Of The Wreck Of The Titanic." It contained all of the cartoon illustrations used in this video and some others. Interesting stuff.

I much prefer the "then."

Amazing. Thanks for such detail.

I've always wondered why he floor ws so dirty in the private promenade deck. Maybe it hadn't been cleaned yet?

Today I found myself wondering if the Olympic ever sailed over the grave of the Titanic in its 20+ years of service?
1
I remember reading about this disaster in Life Magazine at the time. A few of the archival pictures featured here were in that article.
1
I don't believe it for a minute. The Olympic was repaired and went on to serve fore more than 20 years. The Titanic was tragically lost due to careless navigation on it's first trip out.
