New variants will surface forever, each one more virulent than its predecessor, thanks in large part to masks, social distancing, lock downs and the vax, which have short-circuited herd immunity and created ideal conditions for mutations. Everything depends on whether people will tolerate more of the kind of abuse of power we've seen so far.
