If russia wanted to demolish the reactors, they could easily have done so. This was not thier goal. They wanted to take over a functional plant. It's unfortunate but they are the world wide experts in operating nuclear tech. Obviously they are planning to preserve this power source for the belief that they will run the country and its power grid.
