@chasehedges6775 I'm late GenX. The internet is the biggest change. We used to go to the public library to do our homework and hang out with friends when we were in middle school. Most of us played 2 or 3 sports in high school because we'd be bored if we didn't (I wasn't that good and still played). Oh yeah. And, I had a job at 11. I delivered newspapers to our neighborhood.

A couple of things: 1- the internet / videos: I used to read the entire newspaper as a kid. There was a small section in the Metro section for local crimes. Sometimes, a few big national crimes were reported. 2- while crime per capita is down, the population has doubled since 1980. Depending on your area, net crimes could be way up because more people live there.

@truthhurts2879 It's not that. I don't think you were alive in the '70-'80s to experience really bad crime in certain areas. I wasn't either, but I did grow up in Baltimore which was dangerous in the '90s when I was hanging out in downtown Baltimore. YouTube is cranky, so you can't attach data anymore. Look up NYC crime statistics by year. The '70s-'80s were crazy.

@truthhurts2879 Without looking at evidence, I think crime in suburbs has probably increased. People in the 'burbs thought there was some invisible forcefield that protected them. First thing I noticed about LA and mused (in the 2000s), "wait, Beverly Hills is this close to grittier parts of LA?".

@ReapingTheHarvest lol, dude. Look up the crime statistics in NYC in the '70s-'80s. M-u-rders peaked in early '90s at 2,000 per year. Now, it's less than 500 with a higher population. 350K burglaries per year! 100K robberies. 180K stolen cars.
