  4. I think it’s fair to comment on cultural differences that played a role in students listening to authority figures in Korea. There is zero chance as a high school kid that I’m hanging out in the bottom of a ship that is titling. In the US, we learn to challenge authority, critical think and make decisions at a young age. No one is blaming the kids.

  14. RIP. Just awful way to go out. Had to make the decision to jump. Then, muster up the courage. And, miss the landing. The second person should have waited (obviously). Fire department has to take some responsibility and make sure there are ropes to stabilize the air cushion. Even a heavy breeze would flip that thing without something holding it down.

  17.  @nekowafer4017  Listening to authority and respecting elders is something that is ingrained into Korean culture for over 1,000 years. It's not going to change. Why do people twist words for fit their own opinions? Explaining how things work isn't the same thing as an "excuse" or deflecting blame. It's a method of understanding why things happen. People rarely do drugs in Korea and everyone tries drugs in the states. Should Korea be able to dictate to the US why drugs are bad? No, its a societal difference and helps people understand different cultures.

  22. Korea neglected the adoptee community for decades, but recently (5-10yrs) have really stepped up in trying to make amends. Adoptees can become dual citizens now if they so choose.

  23.  @tidi4898  I'm talking about cultural differences of 2 countries: US vs Korea. Are you from either? I'm from both. Born in Korea and raised in the states. Why do people feel like they are experts in other countries? It's very odd. Let me get this clear: we aren't raised to respect authority in the US. We are bombarded with challenging the norms and doing stupid stuff. These are the things we did in before 9th grade: cut school, roamed mountains without parents, vandalism for fun, smoked cigs, drank alcohol, tried weed, egged houses, threw snowballs at cars, sneak out at night when staying over a friends house (and this is the stuff I remember). And we grew up in the suburbs of an East coast city and were in the top 20% of our class grade wise. In Korea, no one does this kind of stuff unless you are a troubled kid. Its just not part of their norms to challenge authority blatantly. ( Oh yeah, I've actually taken a ferry from Incheon port.)

  27. Korea is a much more urbanized and educated society since the '70s and even '80s. Urbanization was only 40% in 1970 climbed to 65% by 1985 and now sits over 80%. Way less people going to school after high school. Likely less than 30% in the '80s and now it's over 70%. Plus, there was an well trained apparatus and for lack of a better word "conscience" by the secret police / military to hurt their fellow citizens under than command of the government. The Korean apparatus now is setup to allow protests and make sure police and citizens don't get hurt. It was an "odd" political move by Yoon.

  32.  @miri283  Correct. The US has a bunch of dumbass people, but when it comes to experiences, people in the US are way less sheltered than people in Korea. There is much more person to person interaction in non-school settings. Sports, clubs, part-time jobs etc. In Korea, you just study. More experiences help you "critically" think in unfamiliar situations. Social media has somewhat destroyed this in the past 5+ years though.

  40. Look, the birth thing is really bad. And, obviously it's impacting enrollment. But, I looked up the first 2 schools. The first one is way in the East of Korea near no major city. It's really isolated. The second school I was curious about since I lived in Daegu in the past, but that's not really Daegu! It's east of Gumi which I wouldn't consider Daegu. It's kinda by itself.

  42. When I graduated college, I rented a room with a family for 2 years. Also, I took a 2nd job on the weekends as I waited tables on Sat / Sun even working double shifts. I worked 7 days a week for over a year. Even after I moved out I had a roommate for the next 7 years and on and off I kept my 2nd job (although I changed the part-time schedule a bit and only worked 2 shifts: Sat night and a swing shift on Sun 11AM-8PM.). When I finally quit the 2nd job, it felt a bit weird and just started working more at the office job (not getting paid extra). At one point, I didn't take a vacation for 5 years. More out of choice and not because of any constraints. And, that was because my friend was getting married.

  45. If you want to have an audience across the globe, people have to be way more conscientious. It's tough, but it comes with the territory. In the US, we focused on US and "Western" history.   48. A decade ago, I was experimenting a lot for "fun". Water diets are more like cleanses and almost reset your body. But, some people will intermittent fast by the day. Eat Sun-Tue. Fast Wed. Eat Thu-Fri. Fast Sat (something like that). Not my cup of tea (pun intended). Here's the key though: don't mess with your metabolism over a long period of time. Caloric restriction can hurt a person in the long term. A person can go from eating 2000 calories a day without gaining weight to only 1500 calories a day if your body / metabolism downshifts. Always better to increase the exercise portion rather than just restrict calories.

  49. Just terrible. Han Gong-ju was an extremely tough watch. My brain tends to block out details of horrible situations in movies after watching them. The dry rational thing would to debate teen sentences, what are appropriate sentences for certain crimes, etc. Too depressing though.
