RIP. Just awful way to go out. Had to make the decision to jump. Then, muster up the courage. And, miss the landing. The second person should have waited (obviously). Fire department has to take some responsibility and make sure there are ropes to stabilize the air cushion. Even a heavy breeze would flip that thing without something holding it down.

You have to understand that Korea went through rapid growth from the '70s. Like the video said, fire sprinklers weren't mandatory even in 2003. These buildings got grandfathered in when new laws were passed.

In theory, those air mattresses are supposed to collapse somewhat on impact. Something went wrong.

@Johanneslol11 I used to go to bar in Incheon with my cousins in the 2000s. It was near a university and the bar had a makeshift 2nd floor where you couldn't stand up because it was only 5 feet high. Personally, I enjoyed some of the oddities. But, yeah. Seems like they were late in fire safety. The US had a law in 1990 that forced all hotels to retrofit sprinkler systems.

@francesmitchell5237 It's likely the fire in the Daegu subway opened Korea's eyes on fire safety a bit too late. Korea until then was always fighting between rapid expansion vs safety. Feels like that was the turning tide moment. Probably should have been Sampoong Department store, but Korea was very reactionary rather than preventative.
