  3. Totally underselling the pain that is spread out due to the “debt” structure of developers. Generally speaking, 1/3 of debt is bonds, 1/3 is pre-payments and 1/3 is debt to suppliers. Sure banks are “protected”, but everyone else is totally f’d. Also, the magnitude of debt. Just Evergrande and Country Garden have debt of close to 3% of GDP. When Lehman folded, their debt was about 0.5% of GDP.

  6.  @dansands8140  Japan had a lot of bullets in the clip to defend itself via monetary / fiscal policy. Also, Japan had establish into a developed economy with a high standard of living for nearly all of their citizens. CCP China wishes they had the same setup.

  7.  @choiswimmer  Actually, that's not how the US works. The Federal government has a separate pension plan: FERS which is a multi-tiered plan. But, it's backed by the government and is underfunded. Social security trust is a totally separate entity. State and local governments have their own pension plans.

  8.  @freemanol  Politely, you are misinterpreting the statistic. It's not talking about % of ownership. It's saying that household wealth at the total is 70% housing. The other 30% is stocks, bonds or cash in banks.

I read one many months ago.

Also, I remember seeing an article that Japanese customers love DVDs and CDs still. Amazon Really Wants Japanese Music Fans to Stop Buying CDs. CDs and DVDs account for almost three fourths of music sales (from 2020)

  14. The sneaky underreported Netflix strategy is overwhelming "youngish" directors will large sums of money to do their magnum opus. Film budgets are way smaller in other countries. Netflix will plunk down 2-3x a healthy film budget and let these directors do a long series. The Squid Game guy got $15-20M to do his series. Dude had been thinking about that series for 10 years. And, the average film budget in Korea is <$5M. Never would have gotten the funding. Plus, Netflix doesn't interfere in the content or direction. They just worry about the budget.

  15. I'm an idiot and I could have solved the housing crisis a decade ago. 1- true escrow accounts. None of this double dipping using prepayments as extra leverage 2- RE annual tax. The perverse incentives for local governments to keep selling land at higher prices would be mitigated somewhat. Housing costs soared because...local government were charging higher prices!

  16. If there wasn't covid and you had these sudden drop in sales from China, it would be a shock. The China region is actually growing year over year, but over putrid numbers. Companies need to reset and realize this is the new baseline for China. Ain't getting back to pre-2020 numbers for a while.

  18.  @gustavalexander8676  It's a social security fund with Chinese characteristics. Funds are intermixing with no differentiated accounting. No transparent payouts. No transparent fund projections. In short, social security funds are funding large pensions for government officials. The split is as bad as 55% of the payouts going to government officials and 45% going to the public.

  21. lol, last quarter, BABA grew by +5% in revenue with lower margins. I'll cheat and not use their operating margin because it's terrible. Adjusted EBITA up by a whopping +1%. Going to get worse since that's Oct-Dec data. Next quarter is lapping their "re-opening".

  23.  @wbwarren57  I would concur, but realistically the journalists aren't top tier analysts. Very few of them are digging into the hard data since they don't have skin in the game. Then, they have people on the shows that are pushing their books.
