  2. As an adoptee, the terminology is "biological", not "real". Or if your adoptive parents are decent people, they just become your parents (no additional title needed). Parents (adoptive) vs Biological

  6. People want to color Obama, but the dude had Midwest values due to being raised by his grandparents. But, he also had a world view shaped by his other experiences: living in Indonesia, Hawaii, California, Harvard, Chicago. Not sure if we’ll find a more perfect candidate in our lifetime.

  8. Easier said than done. I'm ethnically Korean, but grew up in the States. My Korean peeps have a lot of beef with people from the past especially the Japanese. And, still a bit annoyed about things that happened 500+ years ago with the Chinese.

  21. The mistake was not transferring the old Soviet equipment immediately (from other Eastern EU countries). Takes time to train on the US systems.

  28. Not all kids that are adopted feel the need to find their roots. Everyone’s journey is different. I’m a Korean adoptee and had no desire to search for my birth family. My birth family had other ideas and searched for me though.

  37. Most of them are just "assembled in the US" now or at least a good portion the last time I checked. Realistically with shoes, labor is a very very small fraction of the price you pay. I'm pretty wishy-washy now with made in the US vs other countries. I try to avoid China as much as possible though.

  39. The irony is we didn't have this issue until the crackdown in the mid-1990s. Labor used to flow back and forth, so people would come to work and then go back South. When they "closed" the border, people were afraid they wouldn't be able to get back in.
