It's not that he was just reckless, but he lied twice about the shooting. First, he told the police he was asleep and didn't know what happened. Then, he changed his story to he tripped on a nail and the gun went off. If the dude would have come clean from the beginning and called 9-11 after the shooting, I'm sure the charges would have been much less.
