It's a total non-issue. They need to have dollar reserves regardless of what happens unless they completely stop doing business with the US. How they choose to invest those reserves is their choice.

All countries have corruption. It's too wide / vague of a term. Korea while corrupt during their industrial period generally funneled money towards infrastructure and growth which laid the groundwork for their success. Only now is it a hindrance since a few companies monopolize the market. And, it's debatable if it's a pure negative.
8
lol, you think companies pay higher salaries when prices are falling? Keep the same amount of workers. Deflation is a death spiral.
6
The dude was scandal ridden with 1MDB. Maybe GST has some impact, but I'd imagine he would have survived if GST was the only issue.
6
I was shocked to see the data on how few Chinese pay income tax. It’s <5% of people. Then, I realize they have to keep salaries artificially low for manufacturing. But, the government still needs to squeeze people so a regressive high VAT is used. I imagine Indonesia is in the same situation.
6
lol, Singapore knows how to run a country. Why drag them into Indonesia’s mess?
5
lol, smaller countries that have local industries will fight tooth and nail. Have you seen the tariffs from Indonesia, Pakistan, and even Russia now?
3
USD is the most liquid and tradeable currency in the world. There are no capital controls. It’s why the yuan will never be a reserve currency. To be.a reserve currency, the country loses the ability to control the trading band.
2
Taxing unrealized capital gains is a mess. No country should ever do this minus an inheritance tax.
2
You don't know US products? You are literally using a website that is American made. You are using a phone OS that is American made: Apple iOS or Android OS.
2
They thought they found this magic formula of selling land and real estate prices would go up in perpetuity. We all know how that is going. Now, they are behind the 8 ball. No tax revenue from selling land. And, no one pays taxes.
2
People really don't understand the real world implications on US debt and the impact to the wider world ie emerging countries. They have no idea about spreads on debt yields.
2
If geopolitics weren't involved, all Chinese financial institutions would be running a version of the yen carry trade. Borrowing massive amounts of money in yuan and buying UST hand over fist. Yields are nearly 300bps higher in UST than Chinese government bonds. The risk of the yuan is not about appreciating, but depreciating which makes UST even more valuable when dollar dividends are paid.
2
Congrats! (being serious) Someone that actually understands bond yields.
2
@billinsf88 lol, you literally didn't look at the total number. Why are we talking about China and UST when their holdings are <2% now?
1
@billinsf88 Obviously, you don't trade any instruments. Chinese UST holdings are underwater right now. If they tried to dump them, they would be losing massive amounts of money. Not only are they underwater, a massive sell would increase yields even higher. Thus, more losses. Yellen going to China had nothing to do with UST. And, yes. Japan is a bigger issue because of a combination of the yen carry trade and large Japanese institutional investors. But, the BoJ has its own problems. They can inch up their yield, but they aren't going to spike it.
1
@billinsf88 Geez, and it's comical that you don't understand the broader implications to the world if UST has an extremely large yield.
1
@ lol, can't deal with this anymore. You are shooting from the hip without any bullets. Saudi Arabia Raises $11 Billion Loan to Help Fund Deficit The kingdom sold $12 billion of bonds on Monday, while the sovereign wealth fund announced a $7 billion Islamic loan signed with 20 banks. Saudis are raising cash to spend. You really think they have $700B in cash just sitting there? This is what happens when ideologues are uneducated about topics. The stripes are revealed when they continue to talk. My advice: don't go in detail about topics.
1
@ sigh. People always talk about de-dollarization and never talk about the opposite side of the coin. What currencies are going to appreciate if the dollar gets so called "smashed"? lol, the yuan that doesn't free float? The euro? The yen? The funniest part is people focus on fx as single transaction. You think the Saudis are paying LIV golf players in yuan? As long as the US has assets that generate a return, the dollar will do fine. lol, quoting Trump about anything related to Economics is a fool's errand.
1
Won’t ever happen. The rule of law in Singapore and stability will always keep Singapore attractive. Oh yeah, and the super low tax rates.
1
They have a sovereign wealth fund. Basically, it cancels out their debt.
1
@PsychoAMVproduction lol, a Sony phone uses Android OS. lol, a global CFO doesn't even know what OS is in his phone. Sure dude. Sure. YT wasn't even created 20 years ago. Geez, this is amusing.
1
@PsychoAMVproduction Btw, "Global CFO" guy. Did you know that the US created...the internet? No only did the US create the internet, it hammered out the structure and developed all the tech to make it functional. All modern "tech" has been invented and developed by US, Japanese and European companies. The Chinese couldn't even make a ballpoint pen until 2017.
1
@mohammed44_ Obviously, you aren't American. It's an American company. That qualifies as...American. That's how we roll.
1
@mohammed44_ lol, yeah. That's not how it works. Again, obviously you aren't American.
1
Salaries have to be low for manufacturing. If not, jobs will go elsewhere. It's the the impossible task of threading the needle.
1
@ No one ever completes the other end of the transaction. It's because they are 1 dimensional ideologues. Of course the answer is buying Chinese Real Estate, lol.
1
@ I will feed you like a baby. There always becomes a yield on UST that becomes attractive.
1
@ Samsung stock is -35% off it's peak. Very defined level. Do you even know what a stock chart is? You used a terrible example.
1
@user-wb8mp9by9f lol, zero chance you are playing stocks on the Korean exchange. So, you shorted in Jul 2024? Born and raised in the US sport. Try again.
1
Bond yields are very low in Japan. 10yr is 0.25%. It’s also why the Yen is getting slammed now.
1
@rajairfan2768 Yeah, I'm talking about Korea in the 1960-70s. It was pretty corrupt back then and a dictatorship. But generally, the dictator didn't take the money for personal monetary gain. Just retaining power. That's why Park Chung-hee is the "odd" dictator of the 20th century. A tyrant and ethnically challenged that wanted to build Korea into a power.
1
Anytime a country has capital controls, it’s being manipulated.
